oom and nothing I can do about it... - 2006/07/10 02:25
I recently made my first Baron run in UD Strat. We wiped the first time and someone asked the tank "Did you get heals?" and he said "No." I was healing, but I didn't know that I'd have to chain cast Flash Heal because of the burst damage that the Baron would be dealing to our tank.I was using Greater Heal and it was just too slow. We went back for a second try at him and I didn't cast anything except Flash Heal, barely keeping the tank alive. I drank a Superior Mana potion and still went oom. If not for Last Stand and Shield Wall, he would have gone down again. I felt helpless and pretty useless.
I have a few questions.
First some facts:
The Warrior was using a shield (don't know his spec for sure, but said it was Protection).
I have just over 6K mana http://ctprofiles.net/2029767
We had a Rogue, a Mage and a Hunter. (seems perfect, right?)
Now the questions:
From your experiences, did I do something wrong?
Were the DPSers just not doing enough damage to keep the fight down to a reasonable length?
Is the fate of all Priests to chain cast FH?

Domenico – I think a lot of the trouble you encountered may be due to lack of experience. You were the main healer in your first Strath UD run. Congratulations on surpassing a major milestone in your journey to becoming an uber healer  . Now quit kicking yourself in the butt!
I can think of a few reasons why you felt that you struggled through that fight:
- were you having to spread out your healing? With the group you had, you mainly want to focus your healing on the tank. You should be able to keep the Hunter and Rogue alive with your highest level Renew. If not, they’re taking too much damage. The Mage may require a bubble or two while he/she takes out the skellies. This should leave you with little else to do besides keeping the MT up.
- It could be that the MT is in need of a make over. I don’t recall damage spikes in a Baron fight to be that unmanageable. If the MT is poorly equipped, the healer’s role naturally becomes much more difficult.
- How are you spec’d? There are talent points that I feel are must-have’s to help you pull through the long fights. Disc: Meditation and Divine Spirit for the mana regen, Mental Agility to make the PW:S and Renews less mana demanding, and last but not least Mental Strength for the 10% boost in mana. Holy: Holy Spec + Inspiration is a great combo for damage mitigation. I also like Imp Renew, Imp Healing, Divine Fury, and Spiritual Guidance. Keep Renew on the tank, and FH7 until you land a crit heal – this will trigger Inspiration, and you should notice a nice difference in the damage the MT is taking. As long as you see that your tank has Inspiration, you should be able to comfortably get by using your more mana efficient spells – Heal 3 or 4, or even GH 3 or 4, if you feel up to it.
I personally use FH very little since they eliminated the mana conserve feature of CT Raid. FH seems to be a popular crutch for healers in situations they are not familiar with. This includes grouping in PUG’s. An important aspect of what makes a good group is being familiar with your group members’ playing styles. I do find that I have to rely on FH a little more heavily in PUG’s.

No. I was told by the tank to just use Flash Heal on him, so I left everyone to their own devices. Maybe he knew something that I didn’t. Like he wasn’t really protection spec as he had claimed. The others did fine with Vanish, FD and Mana Shield.

The more people I ask the more I’m starting to think that his gear wasn’t fully repaired. Something I’m going to ask every tank in every PuG from now on. “So. How’s your durability?”

I do tend to fall back on FH in unfamiliar situations though I’m mostly a greater heal guy. I use a technique that I discovered by accident. I start casting and just continue to cancel the spell until it looks like they need a big heal. This keeps me at halfway to casting complete and speeds up my reaction time dramatically.
