Questions from a New Lv60 Priest - 2006/02/17 03:16 Gear Bonuses:
+120 Intellect
+143 Spirit
+158 Healing

Discipline Tree (26)
5/5 Unbreakable Will
3/3 Improved PW: Shield
2/2 Improved PW:Fortitude
5/5 Mental Agility
5/5 Mental Strength
5/5 Meditation
1/1 Inner Focus

Holy Tree (25)
5/5 Improved Renew
5/5 Spiritual Healing
5/5 Subtlety
5/5 Improved Heal
2/2 Improved Flash Heal
2/2 Improved Prayer of Healing
1/1 Spirit of Redemption

With the above setup….
1. What would you expect my primary role in a raid to be?
2. Is there any good reason to respec and pick up Holy Specialization or Master Healer?

This is my first 60 Priest and so far I feel that I have been doing very well keeping groups healed. I do have and use CT_RaidAssist and the mana conservation capabilities that it has. I use renew and flash heal almost exclusively. The only Greater Heals I throw are in situations where the MT has dropped 2000+ health and is currently losing health quickly.

Any suggestions or comments are VERY much appreciated.

Re:Questions from a New Lv60 Priest - 2006/02/17 05:33 Until the new patch this is an excellent setup for main healer.

I respec'd once I received my 3rd piece of trancendence. Let me tell you the regen does make a huge difference, vs being just Master healer. Unfortunately have holy nova was a waste of 31 points, even though that was my spec since I started.

I recommend you use Group Buttons as well- that way you can heal bases on what is needed not what rank is on your bar.

IMO use shield sparingly, I typically use it when casters are AOEing, MT is losing too much health (Broodlord, or any Shadowflame).

Re:Questions from a New Lv60 Priest - 2006/02/17 05:57 Yeah, I'm like you in the Shield respect. It is typically reserved for that crazy AOE caster and last resort on MTs. Actually I'm using Click Heal for healing. It binds to your mouse buttons to spells and integrates with CT_Raid.

Thanks for the comments

Re:Questions from a New Lv60 Priest - 2006/02/20 00:39 I would consider trading the 5 pts invested in Imp. Flash Heal, Imp. PoH, and Spirit of Redemption for 5 pts into inspiration.

My reasoning -

Imp. Flash Heal benefits you only when you're getting beat on. You'll almost never need this skill in PvE if you have your Fade button handy. In addition, in some of the higher level instances, aggroing the wrong mob will leave you dead in less than 1.5s, so you wouldn't be able to get a Flash Heal off even with no interruptions.

Imp. PoH is a spell I use pretty sparingly. Anytime I do use it, I proceed it with an Inner Focus, so it's a 'free' spell anyway. Now, if this spell effected people outside of your group, well that would be a completely different story!

Spirit of Redemption was a nice talent when I did a lot of 5-man activities. On more than one occasion, this talent saved us from wiping. In the 40-man raid environment, the benefit just isn't there from what I can see. Chances are, if you are about to take a dirt nap, many people in your party have already died. This is another talent where I would have a completely different opinion about it if it effected people outside of your group.

On to Inspiration - to put it simply, the damage mitigation is just plain yummy! Depending on how you are equipped, you can count on landing a crit heal 1-2 times of out every 10 heals. Once this happens, you can almost sit back and relax while the tank is 'inspired' with the additional 25% armor. When you have multiple Priests healing the same tank (assuming they have the 5pts in Inspiration) you can just about keep the tank 'inspired' for much of the fight. This almost becomes a neccessity in some fights where the damage spikes get pretty high.

Hope this helps. Best of luck to ya

Re:Questions from a New Lv60 Priest - 2006/02/23 01:39 To be the main healer pre 1.10 you only really need 15 in holy...Subelty and Spiritual Healing is the be all end all as far as healing goes.
Discipline doen to inner focus is also all you need in that tree.

Now depending on your gear setup and play style will dictate what else you need/want

Myself, I use a LOT of +x mana/5sec gear, i get about 100 mana/5sec unbuffed so having Meditation is a waste of 5 tallents. For those of us that use spirit instead Meditation is a must have. (mostly because the mana regen gear doens't have much else going for it, i suffer in the stam and +heal dept, but i am rarely oom. Weigh it.)

5/5 Improved Heal
2/2 Improved Flash Heal
2/2 Improved Prayer of Healing
1/1 Spirit of Redemption

The problem i have with the majority of these tallents is that, we wear paper armor, so quicker(?) heals, less interupts...they really don't matter. A good sense of Timing and situational awareness will carry you farther then 10 points in a tree that isn't good past 15 pts.

"But Kae they saved my group a bunch of times and some junk"

And I have never used any of them and only ONCE has a (5-15 man)group wiped with my healer at the helm, and that was because we had no lock to banish (DM west + no loc = death on towers).
I am of the opinion that if you are not a good healer, then these things are the only thing that stands between you and your group dieing.

I am not your happy fuzzy healer, my opinion is (probably) skewed because of it. I melee, I DD, I DoT I will heal like a crazy person, my wand exists for stats only and Unless the fight ends with me OOM i am NOT doing my job properly.

And now, to your questions

1. What would you expect my primary role in a raid to be?
2. Is there any good reason to respec and pick up Holy Specialization or Master Healer?

1. Main Healer
2. No, you may however want to revaluate your role as a healer and respec deeper into Disc or even into shadow. Just a thought.

Note: Typo King since 1989
For the naysayers, yes, i've run MC/BWL/AQ20/40, and all the lower instances. Once you get the strats down for each boss deaths are no longer healers fault, spike dmg/lag are your enemy.
