Overhealing... What Do You Do? - 2006/01/02 17:51 This discussion has come up a lot with groups I raid with lately.

An ex-guildmate of mine downloaded an addon that allowed him to track estimated overhealing based on what the heal cast was vs. what the player's health at the time of the cast was. Most of our key healers in Onyxia and MC were between 20% and 35% overhealing, meaning that roughly a quarter of the healing done was wasted.

What strategies do people employ to minimize overhealing? Healing rotations server to minimize it to some degree, but you still need enough healers on main tanks, etc., to prevent them from dropping dangerously low, meaning you're still seeing some overhealing...

Personally, my basic plan of attack is generally to stick to Shield/Renew in the early stages of these fights. I get time to regen some of the mana spent, and I can't overheal with shield (debuff prevents it)...

Thoughts?

Re:Overhealing... What Do You Do? - 2006/01/03 02:07 Are you using CTraid's mana conserve feature? I was using recap for a while as my damage/heal meter (it tracks overhealing) and I'm usually under 15% for an MC run. I also use rank 6 flash a lot which helps when a lot of healers are on one tank. IMO you shouldn't use shield unless it's desperate (i.e. tank under 30%), as it is pretty ineffecient.

Re:Overhealing... What Do You Do? - 2006/01/09 21:47 One way to lower your reported overhealing is to use Renew. Like Rejuvenate, unused HOT healing is not reported to the combat log so is not included in the calculation.

To lower actual overhealing:

* Rotations, passing off when the active healer reaches a certain threshold.

* Stacking Renew and Rejuvenation to absorb a few hundred DPS and reduce the DPS that needs to be covered.

* Spam casting with mana conserve settings to avoid reactive overhealing by multiple healers when a health bar dips too far - this reactive healing can also take too long to save the tank on multiple crits or other mishaps. When multiple healers need to be on the same target at the same time, these can be staggered. For example: Flash Heal at -900, Greater Heal 2 Priest at -1800, Greater Heal 4 Priest at -2900, with the latter two continuously casting/autointerrupting halfway through the other one's cast (they should keep an eye on this other to stay in synch) to avoid both landing at the same time. At the same time there can be a Druid keeping Rejuv fresh and also spamming Regrowth at a -3900 threshold (this is with a tank at 6700 HP) so Regrowth only lands when health spikes down sharply. What you should see with the right interrupts is a lot of interrupts, the tank's health fluctuating on the right side of his health bar, and if it drops below that it quickly jumps up to full. (Note these numbers are just examples and should be adjusted to circumstances.)

Re:Overhealing... What Do You Do? - 2006/01/12 17:25 I barely ever use my shield.
First of all it's too expenssive in mana and second because i get loads of agro from using it...

The shield should only be used before the pull so the fight probably will be saved if the MT starts out with a critical hit - make sure the tank waits 15 seconds before pulling so a new shield can be dropped on him if he gets low to begin with.
Another place to use the shield is to give a instant "heal" - those 1.4 secs a flash heal takes with 3 items of prophecy can be too long - so a shield might save the tank. This should only happen if the MT goes exstremely low in a fight.

Actually i don't know how much im overhealing...
I don't expect it to be more than 15-20% but i overheal when i critheal...

My manaconserve settings: Flash heal: 1200 - Heal: 1800 Check: every 0.5 sec

If you wanna see my equipment you can find Sikots - Troll Priest level 60 on Skullcrusher on Allakhazam.

Gonna download the damage (agro) meter with the overhealing status

Re:Overhealing... What Do You Do? - 2006/02/07 17:46 I use manaconserve but set at 35%. Mainly, it prevents me from casting a heal when someone else has just launched one.

Best manaconserv is on my screen. I've put the life deficits with CTRA and I know when I can heal.

I can also see if there's a hot running (priest or druid). I'm usually around 15% overheal if I use some group heal or if I'm in a position to use a lot of renew, and around 10% if I just use FH & GH.

Re:Overhealing... What Do You Do? - 2006/02/07 19:14 Just remember to adjust the conserve for the situation.

If the tank is taking massive damage, like at Broolord in BWL, you really need to have your flash heal "heal anyway" if the tank is 500hp low.

And speaking of shields, they are perfect for using directly after a tank has had aa Mortal Strike. And watch out for the comic event of every priest casting Shield when the tank is low on hp, one will land, the rest will miss a heal and the tank might die instead
