The most confused newb ever. - 2005/08/17 02:30
I don't get these. I've been trying to read up on each set for a while now, but I guess I don't see the huge benefit that everyone raves about. Alot of them only look like a lot of clutter. I see how some of these mods create rules that only allow you to cast if you have 'X' amount of mana or more or they say that your spell will be scaled to the level of your target (which I guess those 2 make sense), but otherwise, I'm completely missing the hype.
Currently I don't have any addons or other whatcha-ma-dingers. I have turned on 3 spell bars on my UI and I mapped out all my keys. First bar is just the numbers, then second bar is Alt+number, and third bar is Ctrl+number. I use the 'F' keys to target members of my group.
So other than the 2 examples given up above, what am I really missing out on?
Any help understanding this mess would be appreciated. I'm just looking for how I can be a better priest. (yeah yeah, I'm working on getting more levels)

I despise the idea behind the "healhelper" mods. My opinion is that they only make you a worse healer. An experienced healer that knows how to pick the right heals for the situation will always be better than a shoddy AI. By relying on such programs, you stop your own learning progress.
I recommend you get the following UI modifications:
1. One good compilation to streamline the look of the UI and add minor improvements. There are several good ones, but my favourite by far is Nurfed UI. It's clean, functional, and relatively low on lag. If you don't like that one, try one of the other smaller and well supported compilations. Don't get the "OMG MY UI ROX!! 254 ADDONS!!"-compilations, they will only slow your system down.
2. CT_RaidAssist: Once you start raiding, you WILL need this. Until then, it serves little to no purpose. Grab it the first time you intend to be in a group of more than 5 people.
3. If not included in your compilation: Scrolling Combat Text (SCT). It will display the important combat log happenings in nice large types over your character, allowing you to react a lot faster. Vital to any avid pvp'er.
You can grab others if you feel like it, but those are the ones I would recommend to everyone. Start by downloading Nurfed UI, play around with the settings and use it for 5 levels, and see if you still want to use the default one. I'd kill myself if I had to use the default now to be honest.

This was my exact initial thought too. If I can't handle the challange of healing, I shouldn't be a healer. Period.
Raiding is still probably a few levels off, but I'll definatly keep CT Raid Assist in mind. I've read a lil about it and I can definately see it's use in raids. Targets are often difficult to find and you shouldn't have to spend your time trying to click around a Tauren when you should be healing the undead mage.
I just installed the Cosmos interface and found a few useful things there. I initially got it just for the simple fact that Thottbot kept referring to coordinates that I couldn't read without the addon and I wanted to get to a certain fishing hole. Fishing is stressful when you're getting skunked! heehee. I also found the cast scaling for casting the appropriate level buff for the character you're targeting. This is just fun for me cuz I like to throw fortitude around alot for no good reason.
I still need to look up Nurfed UI that you refer to. I like the idea of having a clean and compact looking UI. The default UI isn't too bad, but it doesn't allow for much customization. I just hate screen clutter, but I want to see everything so this may be the way to go.
The SCT that you refer to, does this just open a new chat window only when in combat, or is this a different type of on screen text? In general I keep my chat windows separated instead of tabed and filter out the junk spam so combat text is always up.
Thanks for your input.
