Paladin builds - for beginners - 2005/04/11 06:19
There are three different paths you can take while building your paladin: Holy, Protection, and Retribution.
This website has a great template maker, in which you can choose how you want your paladin built.
Most players spread out the points, with a focus on a certain talent tree.
Holy focus
The holy tree offers bonuses to healing spells, mana, and spellcasting in general. A player will often specialize in the holy tree in order to gain the Holy Shock spell, which is really the Paladin's only way to pull a mob at range with a spell (except for Exorcism, which only works on undead). To start the build, many players will choose to spend 5 points in Spiritual Focus, which gives your healing spells a 70% chance not to lose casting time when you're attacked. I personally see this as a must for all paladins, as it can save you in some hairy battles without having to throw up your Divine Protection shield. Another talent many players like to use is Improved Holy Light. Obviously, the more your Holy Light heals, the less you have to cast it.
Protection focus
Many paladins will choose this tree if they plan on using a one-handed weapon and a shield. Redoubt and Shield Specialization are instrumental in making your paladin much more effective in using his/her shield, by providing a better chance of blocking after a critical hit, and by upping the amount of damage absorbed by your shield. Another talent that most players can use is the Improved Devotion Aura, which increases the armor bonus of that particular aura by 25%. Reckoning is a devastating ability if you are tanking against enemies who hit for critical damage frequently. I've seen paladins mow through multiple enemies at once because of the extra attacks this talent brings. Holy Shield gives you a higher probability of blocking with a shield, while dishing out damage every time you do so.
Retribution focus
While the Protection tree is geared towards one-handed wielders, the Retribution tree is a good setup for two-handed specialists. A good seal for any paladin to have in his/her arsenal is the Seal of Command, which gives a chance for a fair amount of additional damage whenever it is activated. Consecration is an excellent skill for maintaining mob aggro and fighting multiple enemies. Blessing of Kings is the paladin's most well-rounded buff, providing a 10% increase to total stats. At the top of the tree, Improved Blessing of Might is a good investment for paladins that are grinding for experience, and also to assist other party members. Benediction is more helpful later down the road, and I would recommend it over Improved Blessing of Might if the player decides to spend the points to obtain Blessing of Kings. You could start out with Improved Blessing of Might, and then pay the 1 gold to respec your paladin at the time you obtain Blessing of Kings, and move the points over to Benediction.
There is much more information that can be given about the three talent trees, but this thread is just a guideline for anyone first looking at spending talent points. Please post any other advice or insight on what talents beginners could benefit from.

I've started a Paladin, and I'm finding more and more that I am inclined to tri-spec, although perhaps not in a classic fashion.
My Paladin will be tri-spec with Holy maxxed for Holy Shock. The advantages to this are simple:
Some of the best powers in both Protection and Retribution are at the bottom. Improved Devotion Aura and Improved Blessing of Might are both low and easy to get.
Holy Shock and many of the healing talents are just frickin' awesome.
Am I totally off base here?

I've been thinking about it, and this raises an interesting question:
How viable would a Protection specced Paladin be as a tank?
With the improved threat Seal, Repentance, incredible damage mitigation... I imagine that, provided they could hold aggro, the Paladin would almost be a better tank than the Warrior (whose primary function slowly seems to be moving towards DPS...).
Any thoughts on this, or do I have to level a Paladin to 60 myself and find out?

At the moment a paladin can only tank in strat/scholo (holy wrath = ae taunt, exorcism pull). In other instances we dont have ae taunt, and is very dificult to keep aggro.
We can tank but a warrior tank 1000 times better.
