Question about Spirit Tap - 2006/01/31 11:41 Hi guys, just signed up to the forums, I really like this site for all the info and the ability to browse at work.
My question is about Spirit Tap, I know what it says in the item description, but I really wondering how to maximize ST to reduce downtime. I'm 48 and have all my Talent points in the Shadow tree. I know that Spirit Tap only activates when you kill a mob that gives honor or XP. Just trying to figure how to use the 100% increase in Spirit and 50% mana regen while casting to my advantage. As of right now I see no difference when it is active and it is not. Thanks in advance.

Re:Question about Spirit Tap - 2006/02/10 02:05 Spirit Tap seems useless at first in a way. I know what you mean by how it seems to not make much of a difference, but I finaly (at lvl 19) played around and figured out how to use it to make grinding faster and more efficient. I've read a lot of guides but no guide that I have stumbled upon really describes a good technique pattern of how to specifically use it. All guides seem to just assume you know how to use it well.

The key is to get in a groove when you are grinding (this might take a little experimentation against some easier mobs). Some people, when soloing, pull one or maybe two mobs at a time and then rest for a bit and start again with a new mob after they are at full health and mana again. The key to Spirit Tap is to chain mobs like a train and essentially NEVER LET THE 5 SECOND RULE COME INTO EFFECT AND NEVER CAST A SPELL WHEN YOU ARE NOT INSIDE OF SPIRIT TAP.

So here is an example I used (on Harpies): I start off at full with buffs and cast Sheild, (wait for mana to regen to full real quick), I cast Smite, then Pain then two more spells until the mob is at about a little over a quarter health, I then just attack with my staff (soon the 5 second rule will wear off and my mana will start to regen since im only using staff). I had only cast about 3 spells and Pain so far so my mana went down only a little. At this point, after another hit of my staff, the mob will be at minimal health and run (they dont have to run, im just saying). When they are almost through, but before the final blow from Pain, I START LOOKING FOR ANOTHER NEARBY MOB to target and I get ready to attack them and let Pain finish off the mob I was fighting. NOW THIS IS WHERE SPIRIT TAP COMES INTO EFFECT. My mana is still like 5/6ths full so from now on in the fights, I will not cast anymore spells unless I am inside of the 15sec Spirit Tap (15 seconds of casting is all I need to take the mob to less then half health - if it isnt, find lower lvl mobs). As soon as the the mob is killed by Pain, and AFTER Spirit Tap comes on (not before), I attack the next mob with Pain, then with spells. I attack with spells untill the Spirit Tap countdown is down to like 3 (enable your timer from settings) and then I switch to my staff (it is important to not cast a spell and have it hit right after Spirit Tap is over as to not accidentally make the 5 second rule start for casting a spell). I hit the mob with my staff until hes low and I let Pain finish him off too while I go find the next guy. As soon as the mob dies from Pain, Spirit Tap is on again. At this point, I might cast a heal on myself (if I need it) just before I attack the third mob and I might only get 2 spells off before Spirit Tap is over this time so I would have to fight longer with my staff. But the important thing is, my mana NEVER STOPS REGENERATING. At this point, I might still be at like 5/6th of my mana and still at full health. Because I never let the 5 second mana rule take effect, I am efficiently constantly gaining mana, almost as much as I am using up with attack spells and heal spells. You can keep going like this, just marginally lowering your mana for dozens of mobs or untill you make a mistake or pull too many. You rarely need to take a break. It's the most efficient way to grind even if the mobs are one or two lvls below you.

Re:Question about Spirit Tap - 2006/03/07 06:22 Spirit Tap kicks ass if you learn a good mana efficient way to pull. I learned it by following the guide at http://wow.whispre.com (I have no affiliation with them).

Anyways, I specced with my first 5 points in Spirit Tap and then got myself a kickass wand.

Then to pull I do:

Mind Blast
Then immediately hit SW: Pain (you can fire it right after a spell!)
Then back up a little and hit Mind Flay as the mob comes at you. If you're at max range you can get a full Flay off.
Shield
Wand to death.

Slow? Yea, kinda...wanding seems lame, right? But with a decent wand (I always had a blue quality wand) and high spirit you never, ever run out of mana. I'm level 60 now and only once I hit the 50s did I need to buy mana drinks (minus instances of course).

This route is VERY easy to solo and if you're calm when you get double pulls you can keep wanding, and shield as need. Then once the first mob is dead, turn to the 2nd, MB, Pain, Flay and wand to death again. You still end up with a lot of mana at the end, which means you can keep going.

I highly recommend this route!
