Healing Mages and Warlock - 2006/02/06 05:15
My guild is starting to raid ZG. Durring the raid, our mages and warlocks drop fast. They have been a struggle for our party to keep up with.
I was hoping for some best practices for healing those "tanks in pajamas" or "squishy tank" types (Mages and Warlocks)
Is spam healing perfered?
Can renew be stacked?
What is the suggested frequency of shielding?
Is a balenced group really needed?
Thanks for your help,
Bryjake

Really, it all boils down to aggro management.
You need a MT that is going to be able to maintain aggro, and you need mages/warlocks that know when it is time to back off from the DPS.
Also, it really helps to use CC methods when clearing the trash mobs... Druid-Sleep, Rogue-Sap, and Mage-Sheep are the three that we use in ZG. That way there really only should be one or two mobs at a time.

Mages and Warlocks will die more often than other classes, its in their "nature", to keep their death tolls down there are a few things that can be made.
1) They need to work toghether. The no.1 reason for a Warlock to die is that he is using hellfire close to a Frost Nova. GG, let him die. It took our casters some time before they managed to work good toghether at this but now they die a lot less.
2) They need to take care of themselves. There is much skill in using AoE abilities, if they do not master them, they will take a lot more damage than needed and will not survive. ZG doesn't have as much leeway as lesser instances.
3) Healers need to be aware of who is taking damage AS it happends and be quick to shield and flash heal, hots are a compleate waste and a good idea is to set manaconserv really low on these groups (4-500) since they take a lot of damage fast.
If your trouble comes from other trash than AoE mobs, you really have an agro management problem. Use CC on as many mobs as possible, make sure that cleansers do their job and cleanse since low hp casters really do not like poison, and have good tanks and smart assisting dps.

In Zul Gurub, casters have trouble staying alive.
for High Priest Mar'li, when she calls for help, all mobs should be taken care by mages and warlocks. It's then very difficult to keep them alive.
Paladins can help by zoning first but mobs will anyway turn toward them. There, as you can have a MT, you should have a main mage which will take the first hits. shield & renew him with help of a druid hot (stackable) and pray. If mages are well together, the main mage will not take aggro continuously.
Also, they have to use blizzard and nova alternatively.

Just for the info: Renew does not stack with Renew.
For ZG there are some classes who will greatly pull you through the instance much faster.
Since many groups are large, if you have alot of Mages, you can crowd control them in a good way. There are lots of mobs to AoE in ZG as well.
The Tiger-aspect boss will require you to have 3 warriors in the raid. Or you will have some trouble.
We usually have 2 priests and 2 druids + 2-3 paladins in the group, works out very well for all bosses. Hakkar is by far the most boring fight I have ever done btw
Jin'do the hexxer is very much about dps, if you plan on taking him without some fancy uncommon strategically pwn-tactic, you should have the rogues for it, 3+.
So, as I said some classes give more advantage than others. Having a completely perfect group is not neccesary tho.

As a general rule, I do not heal non-tanks beyond a HoT.
Agro management is the responsibility of the class doing the damage, and cloth casters should be aware they are wearing paper for armour.
While there are fights where AoE is neecessary or the preferred method of dealing with mobs, it is still the responsibility of the damage dealers to land this damage in a way that they can survive the encounter. Of course this assumes that you have capable tanks, equipped for defence.
