Another Spirit vs mana/5sec gear post. sigh. - 2005/08/04 03:37 This stems froma different post where i was talkign with foxx...figured i'd bring it to its own.

The basic deal behind spirit is

base regen of 17 mana /2 sec ( no matter the lvl)
and 1 spi = .25 mana regen per tick (or every 2 sec...OUT of 5 sec rule)
thus 4 spi = 1 mana regen / 2 sec tick

comparing spirit to mana per 5 gear is an interesting thing that I and another priest in my guild, Quk, talk about alot.

to "see" how much mana per 5 is when compared to spi try this.

say you have mindtap talisman trinket...11mana /5sec
how much is that per 2 sec?

11/5 = x/2
so x = 4.4 mana per 2 sec interval
which translates into...
4.4 mana x 4 = 17.6 Spirit

the key here though..is this essential "17.6 spirit" is constant...whether you are in the 5 sec rule or not...thus this will help you in decided what equip is a better path.

for me? always spirit (except on trinkets). Reason being..i have meditation, will soon have 3 trans pieces to make it 30% regen while casting...and I have one of those darkmoon card trinkets..that procs on a sucessful spell cast to give you 100% your normal regen for 15 sec (i.e. as if you were just sitting down not casting or fighting). Also having a dancing sliver staff with a +20 spi enchant on it...I can top off spi aroudn 370 self buffed. AS you can see tahts the route i went.

I also have a set of mana / 5 gear stuffed away in my bank in case i decide i want to use it...dire maul has some AMAZING stuff there i suggest you check it out ! mana per 5 gear is good when your stuck in the 5 sec rule chain casting for a long time (some boss fights if you are chain healing a tank with no rotation and break for mana).

Re:Another Spirit vs mana/5sec gear post. sigh. - 2005/08/04 23:50 Just looking around here this morning, I've found at least 3 different formulas that supposedly make up the spirit to mana regen thing. I think a lot of the confusion about this subject just stems from the fact that no one is exactly sure how spirit is turned into mana. The latest formula you posted seems to be about right though, so that's the one I'll be going with. Site Admin - http://www.WoWHealers.com

Re:Another Spirit vs mana/5sec gear post. sigh. - 2005/08/05 00:04 This is what I came up with ....

It is generally known that:

5 spirit = 1 mana regen/2 seconds

So, it stands to reason that ...

5 spirit = 2.5 mana/5 seconds

Using a ratio to compare "restores Y mana every 5 seconds":

5 spirit/2.5 mana per 5 seconds = X spirit/Y mana per 5 seconds

or

2 * Y = X

In conclusion:

Given "restores Y mana every 5 seconds," 2Y = the spirit equivalent.

Now keep in mind that this "spirit equivalent" can also be regened in combat, so you might want to factor that into your calculations.

Re:Another Spirit vs mana/5sec gear post. sigh. - 2005/08/08 06:57 Two errors there Joey:

4 spirit = 1 mana/ 2 seconds
not 5.

Second, not taking into account the incombat regen of mana/sec items is completely ignoring their greatest strength. Mana/sec is balanced around the fact that it is still working 100% during combat, while your spirit is only doing 0-30% of it's full effect, depending on talents and gear.

When in 100% regen? - 2005/08/08 19:02 Before casting you are in 100% regen. When entering casting you are still in 100% regen? I thought Blizzard changed this, to have spi more effect right? Can't find it where I read it anymore, but i also might have been a suggestion to blizzard, or with spirit tap working.

Then the 5 second rule kicks in. Now when I start a heal before the 5 seconds are over, am I in full regen for the while it takes to cast the spell?

And where does the meditation talent work?

Re:When in 100% regen? - 2005/08/08 22:57 For example: I notice that after I cast a flash heal, my mp regen is at 12/tick ... after 4-5secs, it will regen back at 84/tick.. This goes on whenever I cast a spell.

Re:When in 100% regen? - 2005/08/08 23:43 The way it works as I understand it is this:

You are at 100% mana regeneration while at rest and while you are either casting or channelling a spell. For the 5 seconds following a spell being cast (the 5 second rule), you are at 0% mana regeneration.

This is where Meditation kicks in. During the 5 seconds you would be at 0% mana regen, Meditation gives you 15% (assuming you have 5 talent points in it). So with Mediation, you will always be regeneration mana.

Re:When in 100% regen? - 2005/08/09 10:27 That is correct Xombies.

And admiral, no you won't have full regen while casting the second spell. Starting a cast no longer causes you to enter the reduced regen state, but if you are already in it, it won't bring you out of it.

Re:When in 100% regen? - 2005/08/17 03:28 Static spiritmana/5 sec formulas don't work, as spirit regen rate is going to vary widely based on how long you're within the 5-second rule. Also, if you're in a scenerio where Innervate is a likely candidate, then spirit >>>> mana/5sec.

In MC during boss fights, I typically have 408 spirit and 29 mana/5 sec and am routinely the last priest to run out of mana. Typically, I'm within the 5-second rule during 60%-65% of the fight.

If you haven't already done so, go get the MUSE addon. It'll show you number for spirit, mana/5sec, how long you're within the 5second rule and other useful tidbits for serious number crunching.
