Speccing Restoration, as a Shaman. - 2005/05/28 04:50 How to make a restoration spec Shaman:

Elemental Mastery
Elemental Total: 0

Restoration Mastery
Eventide Rank 5
Nature's Swiftness Rank 1
Improved Lesser Healing Wave Rank 5
Tidal Focus Rank 5
Combat Endurance Rank 1
Ancestral Healing Rank 5
Purification Rank 5
Improved Mana Spring Totem Rank 5
Tidal Mastery Rank 5
Improved Healing Wave Rank 5
Mana Tide Totem Rank 1
Restoration Total: 43

Enhancement Mastery
Ancestral Knowledge Rank 5
Improved Stoneskin Totem Rank 3
Enhancement Total: 8

Breakdown:
In restoration I spent my points to do a few things: Max heals, max mana/hp regen over time, make sure my heals land even if I am being hit.

Nature's Swiftness is a boon, if you want free 1500+hp heals during clutch moments in groups or raids this is an essential.
For obvious reasons you max healing % and mana conservation. I also put points into improved Lesser Healing Wave because it grants you 75% chance to not be interrupted in melee combat while casting LHW (this is great for small groups where you may draw agro)

Mana tide totem is more raid oriented in my opinion, but as I raid MC weekly through ragnaraos I need the mana regen. 900 mana in less than a minute translates into at least 3-4 flash heals for all priests/shaman in the group when you figure in their standing mana regen.

Improved mana spring totem is great, I keep mana spring up almost 100% of the time when our casters are using their mana, 12mana/2secs is comparative to having 32/5sec. (just imagine having a buff that gives you 32 mana every 5 seconds... and you see that shamans put paladins to shame)

For the enhancement tree I took the extra 6% mana (higher mana pool translates to more heals, and larger amount of room for your spirit to regen for extra heals).
Improved stoneskin totem: PRICELESS. 31 dmg reducation is great, in small groups you will be the best friend of all AEing mages, and for the main tank, you can obviously see how this will save you mana in the long run, for mobs that hit for 1000+ you may think this isnt a big deal, but it will add up over time, in a small group where things hit for 200-300+ its almost a 10% damage mitigation tool.

If you have any questions about my build, don't hesitate to ask

Re:Speccing Restoration, as a Shaman. - 2005/09/11 04:16 I love Restoration Shamans, or even Shamans who remember to keep Mana Spring up all the time without constant begging.

Why do you put 5 points in Improved Healing Wave? Do you use it a lot other than with NS and is the reduced time worth it vs putting the points into Reincarnation, Totemic Focus for 10% reduction in mana cost of totems, or Improved Healing Stream, or even Improved Ghost Wolf to help avoid sticky non-Raid situations?

Improved Lesser Healing Wave. - 2005/10/05 05:58 I posted this elsewhere but add it here to show the math behind the usual advice to either max or ignore Improved LHW.

Chance of casting without an interrupt from 2 hits or 3 hits during a cast (simulating multiple assailants):
---------- 2 hits 3 hits

5/5 ILHW: 56% 42% Quite decent.
4/5 ILHW: 36% 22% Not so good.
3/5 ILHW: 20% 9% Why bother?

The more hits (with more or faster assailants) the longer the cast will take, if you live to cast it.
